AI keyboard for iPhone: rewrite, reply and draft where you already type

5 min read · Updated Sep 20, 2026 · Facts checked Sep 20, 2026

Quick answer

An AI keyboard for iPhone is a third-party keyboard you enable in Settings that adds writing actions above the keys: rewrite what you typed, change the tone, shorten it, fix grammar, or draft a reply, and insert the result where your cursor is. The benefit is not smarter autocorrect; it is never leaving Gmail, WhatsApp or Teams to get a better message. The Kloven keyboard does this with a full QWERTY layout, a toolbar of actions (Polish, Shorter, Tone, Reply, Fix grammar, format conversion), a Screenshot key that drafts a reply from an image, and a mic key that hands off to voice.

What an AI keyboard does that autocorrect does not

Autocorrect fixes characters. An AI keyboard works on the message. You type the blunt version (“cant do friday, monday works”), tap Polish, and the sentence in the text field becomes “Friday won’t work on my side, but I can make Monday.” You are still in WhatsApp. The person on the other end sees a normal message. The alternative, which most people do today, is copy the text, open a chatbot, explain what you want, copy the answer, switch back, paste, delete the old text. Eight steps for one sentence.

ShorterCuts a paragraph to the essential linesTeams and WhatsApp, where long messages get skimmed
Fix grammarCorrections only, wording untouchedWhen you want your voice kept exactly
ReplyDrafts a response to the message you are replying toThreads where you know what to say but not how
Format conversionSame content as email, Teams, WhatsApp or SMSSending one update through several channels
VoiceSpeak instead of type, insert the resultLong updates, walking between meetings

How to set up an AI keyboard on iPhone

  1. 1

    Install the app

The keyboard ships inside its parent app. Install Kloven from the App Store and open it once so it can finish setup.

  2. 2

    Add the keyboard

Settings › General › Keyboard › Keyboards › Add New Keyboard, then choose Kloven.

  3. 3

    Decide about Full Access

Tap the keyboard in that list and turn on Allow Full Access if you want the AI actions. Without it the keyboard still types normally and makes no network calls at all. See the next section for what Full Access means.

  4. 4

Switch to it in any app

Hold the globe key on any keyboard and pick Kloven. The AI actions sit in the toolbar above the keys; the rest is a normal QWERTY keyboard.

What “Full Access” actually means

iOS blocks every third-party keyboard from using the network until you grant Full Access. That is why every AI keyboard asks for it, and why people hesitate: the permission dialog says the keyboard could transmit anything you type. What matters is what a specific keyboard does with that permission. Kloven’s keyboard sends text only when you tap an action, and only the text you act on: your selection, or the text near the cursor. It does not log keystrokes, it does not send anything while you type, and the keyboard never records audio itself (the mic key hands off to the Kloven app). Those commitments are written into the privacy policy.

Why keyboard mechanics matter as much as the AI

The most common complaints in App Store reviews of AI keyboards are not about the writing. They are about the keyboard: it changes height, it gets stuck, there is no Enter key, it bounces you out to the container app to see the result. Kloven’s keyboard is a fixed 258 points tall, the same as the system keyboard, has a full QWERTY layout with a return key, and inserts results in place. That sounds basic. In this category it is the difference between a keyboard you keep and one you delete after a week.

Two things only the Kloven keyboard adds

  • The Screenshot key. Tap it, pick a screenshot of a message, and Kloven reads the message, drafts a reply that fits the thread, and sends it back to the keyboard so you can insert it. This is the workflow described on the screenshot to reply page.
  • Voice handoff. Tap the mic key, speak the message in the Kloven app, and come back with the polished result ready to insert. You get live transcription and a transcript check rather than a raw dictation stream. The voice to email page shows what that produces.

Both count against the same allowance as the app: three drafts a day on Free, unlimited on Pro. Your account and Pro status stay in sync between the app, the keyboard and the share sheet.

How it compares with other keyboards

Grammarly’s keyboard (from Superhuman Platform, the company’s name since 2026) is the established choice for grammar and tone suggestions as you type, with a free tier and Pro from $12 a month on annual billing as of September 2026. Wispr Flow and Typeless are voice keyboards: their strength is dictation with cleanup across Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, not replying to a thread. Kloven sits in a different spot: it is about producing the message, from your rough text, your voice or a screenshot, in the format the channel needs. Frequently asked questions

Does the AI keyboard work offline?
As a keyboard, yes. The AI actions need the network, which is what Full Access permits. Without a connection you can still type normally.
Can I use it in every app?
Almost. Any text field that accepts third-party keyboards works: Gmail, Outlook, WhatsApp, Teams, Slack, Messages, LinkedIn. Secure password fields switch back to the system keyboard by design.
Is the Kloven keyboard free?
The keyboard is included with the app. Free accounts get three drafts a day across app, keyboard and share sheet. Pro removes the limit and adds voice and screenshot input; pricing is on the pricing page.
Is there an Android version of the keyboard?
No. Kloven is an iPhone app today and the Android version is not available yet.

Kloven is an iPhone app that drafts messages from voice, screenshots, and text. Drafts are generated by AI and can be wrong; you review everything before it is sent, and nothing is sent on your behalf. Your content is processed to create your draft and is not used to train AI models. Read the privacy policy and terms.
